AWD or 4x4: what is the difference?

All-wheel drive (AWD) splits power between the four wheels without you doing anything. The system reacts when a wheel slips, which helps you pull away on snow and on sloped driveways. It is the most common setup on compact and mid-size SUVs. A 4x4 is often engaged with a control and is aimed mostly at rough roads, light off-roading or towing. For everyday driving between Terrebonne, Mascouche and Montréal, AWD suits most drivers.

What all-wheel drive does, and what it does not

• It helps you start moving and keep traction on snowy or icy pavement.
• It does not shorten your braking distance: tires do that job.
• It does not replace winter tires, which are mandatory in Québec from December 1 to March 15 on passenger vehicles registered in Québec.
• It generally uses a little more fuel than an equivalent front-wheel-drive model.

Models you will come across in our inventory

• Hyundai Santa Fe Sport

Our inventory is mostly compact and mid-size SUVs from mainstream brands, with the occasional luxury model. Because the drivetrain can change from one trim of the same model to another, do not rely on the name alone: the list on this page is filtered on the drivetrain shown for each vehicle. Check the listing, or ask us to confirm before you make the trip.

Checking a used AWD SUV

1. Ask about the history: a CARFAX report is shown on many listings.
2. Look at the condition and wear of all four tires: on an AWD, very uneven wear between tires is not desirable.
3. During the test drive, make tight turns at low speed and listen for unusual noises.
4. Ask about the maintenance of the drive system when the invoices are available.
